Troy-Bilt TB590BC 18-Inch 29cc 4-Cycle Gas Powered Clutched Straight Shaft String Trimmer/Brush Cutter With EZ-Link Coupler

The Troy-Bilt 29 cc 4-cycle clutched straight-shaft gas trimmer features a deluxe adjustable J-handle, making it an ideal choice for both left and right-handed users, and includes a smooth-pull starting system for an easier start. It features EZ-link capability, a feature that allows the upper motor and handle to adapt to various other EZ-Link garden tools and devices (sold separately), and the included cutting line features a bump-head line feed for easy non-stop cutting when more line is needed. The trimmer comes with a 2-year warranty.
Customer Review: Not what is advertised
Having had years of experience with 2 cycle trimmers I was looking for a better more dependable outcome with a 4 cycle trimmer. I selected this Troy-Bilt model from Amazon as I was unable to purchase locally as there were no choices. Delivery was fast, set up was easy, starting it was .... a nightmare. I followed the multi-step starting instructions explicitly, and repeatedly. After repeated attempts I finally was able to start the engine by completely closing the choke lever (position 1) until it sputtered, then opening the choke lever to position 2, it started! After letting it warm up by holding the throttle lever to maximum for several minutes, it would continue to run at idle. However when I positioned the choke lever to position 1 (per the instructions) the engine stopped. This happens every time I am able to start the engine. This engine is not properly adjusted to function per the detailed starting instructions provided by Troy-Bilt. This engine has turned out to be even more frustrating than I have encountered with 2 cycle engines. I also find the engine speed to be slower than 2 cycle trimmers, and this definitely affects the quality and ease of trimming grass. The engine rotation is also different, turning the trimmer string counterclockwise. Being right handed, the grass clippings now completely cover my shoes and legs making a bigger than normal mess. I will be returning this trimmer, and will purchase a 2cycle trimmer at half the cost that will work twice as good.
Customer Review: Great, but...
I have one of these (or it's immediate predacessor model) for 5 years and it worked flawlessly. Then one day I was knee deep in the swamp cutting cattails just under the waterline and KABLOOEY! The cattails wrapped around the bush cutter head and the EZ Link drive cable twisted apart at the coupling. I thought it could do everything! I was disappointed. ;-)) Actually I give it 5 stars. It was saftey engineered well enough that I didn't have my arm cut off when the cutting head wrapped around the cattails and pulled me off my feet into the swamp and the cutter. The safety engine kill and brake worked like a charm. I took the motor (which was still alright) and made a fence post auger out of it. That sucker has some torque! Yes, I am a red-neck if you were wondering...
